Tirmidhi (2499), Ibn Majah (4251), Ahmad (13049), Ibn Hibban in al-Majruhin (2/87), Ibn Adi in al-Kamil (5/1850), and Hakim (4/244) all narrated it through the route of Ali bin Masada al-Bahili, from Qatada, from Anas, who mentioned it. This is a hadith well known among the scholars, who received it with acceptance and cited it as evidence in their books. Ibn Qattan graded it sahih in Bayan al-Wahm wal-Ihaam (5/414), as did Hakim in al-Mustadrak, and Ibn Hajar in Bulugh Maram (1274), where he said, "Its chain is strong."I say, its axis rests on Ali bin Masada al-Bahili, who is disputed. Tayalisi deemed him trustworthy. Ibn Main said, "Salih," and on another occasion said, "There is no harm in him." Abu Hatim said, "There is no harm in him." But Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Nasai, and others judged him daif.Ahmad said, "This is a munkar hadith," and perhaps what he meant by this was that Ali bin Masada al-Bahili narrated it alone, and as you have seen, he is disputed, so his solitary narration is accepted in a hadith like this one, which has become well known among the scholars.
