The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from five things, from cowardice, miserliness, the wretchedness of old age, the trials of the heart, and the punishment of the grave.
كان النبي ﷺ يتعوذ من خمس: من الجبن، والبخل، وسوء العمر، وفتنة الصدر، وعذاب القبر.
Abu Dawud (1539), Nasai (5443), Ibn Majah (3844), and Ahmad (145) narrated it, and Hakim (1/530) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr bin Maymun, from Umar bin Khattab, and he related it. Ibn Hibban (1024) also graded it sahih through the route of Yunus bin Abu Ishaq, from Abu Ishaq, with the same chain. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the criteria of the two sheikhs [Bukhari and Muslim]." This is as he said, though there has been disagreement about whether it is connected or disconnected. Daraqutni favored the connected version, in Ilal (2/187–188), but Abu Zura favored the disconnected version, in Ilal (1990).It has also been narrated from Ibn Masud. Nasai (5446) narrated it through the route of Zakariya, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr bin Maymun, from Ibn Masud, with similar wording, as a raised hadith. Zakariya here is Ibn Abu Zaida, who heard from Abu Ishaq late in his life.
