The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Talha, "Find us a young boy from among your servants to serve me."So Abu Talha took me out, riding behind him on his mount, and I served the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whenever he stopped to rest. I used to hear him frequently say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt, and from being overpowered by Some men." The hadith continues.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Supplications (6363), from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Ismail bin Jafar told us, from Amr bin Abu Amr, the freedman of Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab, that he heard Anas bin Malik say what has already been mentioned. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1365) through Qutayba and others, mentioning part of it, but without the supplication mentioned above.Similar in meaning is what has been reported from Abu Saeed Khudri, who said, one day the Messenger of Allah entered the masjid and came upon a man from the Ansar called Abu Umama. He said, "Abu Umama, why do I see you sitting in the masjid outside the time of prayer?" He said, "Worries that have taken hold of me, and debts, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Shall I not teach you words that, if you say them, Allah will remove your worry and settle your debt?" He said, I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Say when you rise in the morning and when you enter the evening, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men." He said, I did that, and Allah removed my worry and settled my debt for me.Abu Dawud narrated it (1555), and Bayhaqi by his route in Daawat Kabir (305), from Ahmad bin Ubaydullah Ghudani, who said, Ghassan bin Awf told us, who said, Jareeri told us, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he mentioned what has already been related.I say, Ghassan bin Awf was declared daif by Saji and Azdi, and Aqeeli said, "He is not corroborated in much of his hadith." Ajurri said, "I asked Abu Dawud about Ghassan bin Awf, from whom Jareeri transmits the hadith of the supplication, and he said, 'A Basran sheikh,' and this is a rare hadith."
