When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would lie down at night, he would say, "In the name of Allah, I lay down my side. Allah, forgive my sin, drive away my devil, release my pledge, make my scale heavy, and place me among the highest assembly."In another narration, "among the highest company."
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا أخذ مضجعه من الليل قال: بسم الله، وضعت جنبي، اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي، واخس شيطاني، وفك رهاني، وثقل ميزاني، واجعلني في الندى الأعلى. وفي رواية: في الملأ الأعلى
Reported by Abu Dawud (5054), and Ibn Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (718), and Hakim graded it sahih (1/540, 548–549), all of them by way of Thawr bin Yazid, from Khalid bin Madan, from Abu Azhar Anmari, who related it. The wording is that of Abu Dawud. Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its isnad." And it is as he said.Abu Azhar, also called Abu Zuhayr, is said by some to have an unknown name, while others say his name was Yahya bin Nufayr, and he was a companion who settled in Sham.As for his saying, "and drive away my devil," it is pronounced with the hamzah connected and the sin voweled with fatha, from khasatu al-kalb, meaning "I drove it away," so the meaning is "make it driven away from me."As for his saying, "the highest assembly," it means the highest gathering of the angels, since nadi means the gathering of a people in an assembly.
