The companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to him one morning and said, "Messenger of Allah, by the Lord of the Kaabah, we are doomed."He asked, "What is the matter?"They replied, "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy."He said, "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger?"They said, "Yes, indeed."He said, "Then that is not hypocrisy."They came to him a second time and said, "Messenger of Allah, by the Lord of the Kaabah, we are doomed."He asked, "What is the matter?"They replied, "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy."He said, "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger?"They said, "Yes, indeed."He said, "Then that is not hypocrisy."They came to him a third time and said, "Messenger of Allah, by the Lord of the Kaabah, we are doomed."He asked, "What is the matter?"They replied, "Hypocrisy."He said, "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger?"They said, "Yes, indeed."He said, "Then that is not hypocrisy."They explained, "When we are with you, we are in one state, but when we leave you, worldly concerns and our families occupy us."He said, "If you remained, after leaving me, in the same state you are in while with me, the angels would shake your hands along the streets of Medina."
Abu Yaala (3304) narrated it from Abdul-Wahid (that is, Ibn Ghiyath), who said, Ghassan bin Barzin, meaning Tahawi, narrated to us, who said, Thabit Bunani narrated to us, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Ghassan bin Barzin, for his hadith is hasan. Haythami said in Majma (10/558), "Abu Yaala narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except for Hassan bin Barzin, who is trustworthy."
