He heard Muawiya say, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'A group from my nation will continue to uphold the command of Allah. Those who fail them or oppose them will not harm them, and they will remain in this state until the command of Allah comes to pass.'"Umayr said that Malik bin Yukhamir then said, "Muaz said, 'And they will be in Sham.'"Muawiya said, "This is Malik claiming that he heard Muaz say, 'And they will be in Sham.'"
أنه سمع معاوية يقول سمعت النبي ﷺ يقول: لا يزال من أمتي أمة قائمة بأمر الله لا يضرهم من خذلهم ولا من خالفهم حتى يأتيهما يأتيهم أمر الله وهم على ذلك. قال عمير: فقال مالك بن يخامر قال معاذ: وهم بالشام. فقال معاوية هذا مالك يزعم أنه سمع معاذا يقول: وهم بالشام.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Virtues (3641), and Muslim in the Book of Leadership (1037: 174), both through routes from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, who said, "Umayr bin Hani narrated to me," and he related it. The wording given here is Bukhari's, and Muslim did not include Umayr's statement concerning Syria.
