Abu Dharr used to serve the Prophet ﷺ, and when he finished his duties, he would retire to the mosque, which served as his home where he slept. One night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque and found Abu Dharr stretched out asleep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ nudged him with his foot until he sat up.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Why do I find you sleeping here?"Abu Dharr replied, "Messenger of Allah, where else should I sleep? Do I have any home besides this?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down with him and asked, "What will you do if they drive you out of it?"Abu Dharr said, "Then I will go to Sham, for Sham is the land of migration, the land of the gathering, and the land of the prophets. I will be one of its people."He asked, "What will you do if they drive you out of Sham?"Abu Dharr said, "Then I will return here, and this will be my home and my dwelling."He asked, "And what will you do if they drive you out a second time?"Abu Dharr said, "Then I will take my sword and fight in my own defense until I die."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled at him and patted him with his hand, saying, "Shall I show you something better than that?"Abu Dharr said, "Yes indeed, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, Prophet of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go along with them wherever they lead you, and follow them wherever they take you, until you meet me at the Pond while you are still in that state."
Ahmad (27588) reported it from Hashim, who said, Abdul-Hameed narrated to us, who said, Shahr narrated to us, who said, Asma narrated to me, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Shahr bin Hawshab. It is cited in the chapters on mosques.Similar in meaning is what was narrated from Maymuna, the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ, who said, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling concerning Bayt al-Maqdis." He said, "It is the land of the gathering and the resurrection, so go to it and pray there, for a prayer there is like a thousand prayers elsewhere."I said, "What do you think if I am not able to travel there?" He said, "Then send oil as a gift to be used for lighting it, for whoever does that is like one who has come to it."Ibn Majah (1407) and Ahmad (27626) both reported it, from the hadith of Thawr bin Yazid, from Ziyad bin Abu Sawda, from his brother Uthman bin Abu Sawda, from Maymuna, and he mentioned it. Its chain apparently seems sahih and connected, and for that reason Busiri graded it sahih in Zawaid bin Majah, and he said, Abu Dawud narrated part of it also from the hadith of Maymuna, from Nufayl, from Miskin bin Bukayr, from Saeed bin Abdul-Aziz, from Ziyad bin Abu Sawda, from Maymuna. The chain of Ibn Majah is sahih, its narrators are trustworthy, and it is more sahih than the route of Abu Dawud, for between Ziyad bin Abu Sawda and Maymuna stands Uthman bin Abu Sawda, as Ibn Majah made explicit in his chain.I say, despite the apparent soundness of its chain, its text contains something objectionable. Dhahabi said in Mizan (2/90), after mentioning part of the hadith, "This is a very objectionable hadith. Saeed bin Abdul-Aziz narrated it from Ziyad, from her, and this is disconnected. Thawr bin Yazid narrated it from Ziyad as connected."Abdul-Haqq said, "This hadith is not strong."Ibn Qattan said, "Ziyad and Uthman are among those whose narrations must be withheld from acceptance." He also said, "This Maymuna is said to be the daughter of Saad, and is said to be the daughter of Saeed. She has four hadiths in the Sunan, and all four are objectionable." He said, "As for the first, we have already spoken of it," meaning the hadith mentioned. He then went on to mention the remaining hadiths.
