Zaida, or Mazida bin Hawala, said:We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys. The people stopped at a resting place, and the Prophet ﷺ settled in the shade of a large tree. He saw me as I was returning from relieving myself, and there was no one with him except his scribe. He said, "Shall I register you, Ibn Hawala?"I asked, "For what, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Leave it for now," and turned back to the scribe. Then I drew a little closer than before, and he said again, "Shall I register you, Ibn Hawala?"I asked, "For what, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Leave it for now," and turned back to the scribe. Then I came and stood right over them, and I saw at the head of the document the names Abu Bakr and Umar. I thought to myself that those two would only be registered for something good.He said, "Shall I register you, Ibn Hawala?"I said, "Yes, Prophet of Allah."He said, "Ibn Hawala, what will you do in a tribulation that erupts across the regions of the earth like the horns of cattle?"I said, "What should I do, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Hold fast to Sham."Then he said, "What will you do in a tribulation in which the first one will seem like the leap of a hare compared to it?"I do not recall what he said about the latter one, and that I should have known what he said about the latter would be dearer to me than such and such.
