The tribe of Banu Salama wanted to move closer to the mosque, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked that the outskirts of Madinah be left empty.He said, "Banu Salama, will you not count your footsteps as a reward with Allah?"So they stayed where they were.
أراد بنو سلمة أن يتحولوا إلى قرب المسجد، فكره رسول الله ﷺ أن تعرى المدينة وقال: يا بني سلمة: ألا تحتسبون آثاركم فأقاموا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Virtues of Madinah (1887), from Ibn Salam, who said, Fazari informed us, from Humayd Tawil, from Anas, who said what has been mentioned.The dwelling of Abu Salama was in the western area of Masjid Nabawi, and the Prophet ﷺ wanted the tribes spread out around the sides of Masjid Nabawi to remain in their places. Among these tribes were Banu Salama and Banu Bayadha in the western side, Banu Haritha in the northern side, Banu Muawiya and Banu Abdul-Ashhal in the northeastern side, Banu Zafar in the eastern side, and Banu Amr bin Awf, Banu Salim, Banu Harith, and Banu Dinar in the southern side. In this there is prophetic guidance regarding urban planning, namely preventing the concentration of the population in a single location.
