When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the year of the Conquest and word of it reached Quraysh, the narrator recounted the lengthy hadith, in which it is said,Saad bin Ubada declared, "Abu Sufyan, today is the day of slaughter. Today the Kaabah will be made lawful."Abu Sufyan said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Have you not heard what Saad bin Ubada has said?"The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did he say?"Abu Sufyan replied, "He said such and such."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Saad has spoken falsely. Rather, this is a day on which Allah will magnify the Kaabah, and a day on which the Kaabah will be draped."
لما سار رسول الله ﷺ عام الفتح فبلغ ذلك قريشا فذكر الحديث بطوله، وفيه: فقال سعد بن عبادة: يا أبا سفيان اليوم يوم الملحمة، اليوم تستحل الكعبة، فقال أبو سفيان للنبي ﷺ: ألم تعلم ما قال سعد بن عبادة؟ قال: ما قال؟ قال: كذا وكذا، فقال: كذب سعد، ولكن هذا يوم يعلم الله فيه الكعبة، ويوم تكسى فيه الكعبة.
Bukhari narrated it in Al-Maghazi (4280) from Ubayd bin Ismail, who said, "Abu Usama narrated to us, from Hisham, from his father," and he mentioned it. This is a mursal narration, but Bukhari connected it at the end of the hadith, saying, Urwa said, "Nafi bin Jubayr bin Mutim informed me, saying, 'I heard Abbas say to Zubayr bin Awwam, "O Abu Abdullah."'"His statement, "the day the Kaaba was draped," means in the month of Ramadan, because the conquest of Makkah took place in Ramadan, and the people of pre-Islamic times used to drape the Kaaba in Ramadan. However, another narration states that the people of pre-Islamic times used to drape the Kaaba on Ashura.
