Aqra bin Habis said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Only the thieves of the pilgrims have pledged allegiance to you, those from Aslam, Ghifar, and Mazina," and Ibn Abu Yaqub was uncertain whether Juhayna was also mentioned.The Prophet ﷺ replied, "What if Aslam, Ghifar, Mazina, and I think Juhayna as well, are better than Banu Tamim, Banu Amir, Usayd, and Ghatafan? Would they have failed and lost?"He said, "Yes."The Prophet ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they are indeed better than them."
أن الأقرع بن حابس قال للنبي ﷺ إنما بايعك سراق الحجيج، من أسلم وغفار، ومزينة- وأحسبه- وجهينة- ابن أبي يعقوب شك- قال النبي ﷺ: أرأيت إن كان أسلم، وغفار، ومزينة- وأحسبه-، وجهينة خيرا من بني تميم، وبني عامر، و أسيد، وغطفان، خابوا وخسروا. قال نعم، قال: والذي نفسي بيده إنهم لخير منهم.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Virtues (2516), and Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2522-193), both from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Ghundar narrated to us, Shubah narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Abu Yaqub, who said, I heard Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakra narrate from his father, and he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and in Muslim's version it reads, "Have they failed and lost then? He said, Yes..." with the addition of the interrogative particle.Muslim also related it through another route from Shubah, with the same chain, and in it "and Juhayna" appears without any doubt expressed, whereas elsewhere it has "and I think." In another wording, "What do you think if Juhayna, Mazina, Aslam, and Ghifar were better than Banu Tamim, Banu Assad, the sons of Abdullah bin Ghatfan, and Amir bin Sasaa?" A man said, "They have failed and lost then." He said, "They are better than Banu Tamim, Banu Assad, the sons of Abdullah bin Ghatfan, and the sons of Amir bin Sasaa."Bukhari related this in the Book of Virtues (35/5), and Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2522-195), both through the route of Sufyan, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakra, from his father, who said it, and he mentioned it. This is Bukhari's wording, while in Muslim's version, after his words "and Amir bin Sasaa," it continues, "And he raised his voice with it, so they said, O Messenger of Allah, they have indeed failed and lost. He said, No, they are better."
