The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I recognize the voices of the Asharis when they recite the Quran as they enter at night, and I can identify their dwellings from their voices reciting the Quran at night, even though I did not see their dwellings when they settled in by day. Among them is Hakeem, who, when he meets the cavalry," or he said, "the enemy, says to them, 'My companions instruct you to wait for them.'"
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إني لأعرف أصوات رفقة الأشعريين بالقرآن، حين يدخلون بالليل، وأعرف منازلهم من أصواتهم بالقرآن بالليل، وإن كنت لم أر منازلهم حين نزلوا بالنهار، ومنهم حكيم إذا لقي الخيل، أو قال: العدو، قال لهم: إن أصحابي يأمرونكم أن تنظروهم.
Bukhari related it in "The Campaigns" (4232), and Muslim in "The Virtues of the Companions" (166:2499), both from Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, who said, Buraid narrated to us, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, who said, then he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Muslim, and Bukhari's wording is similar.
