I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Deeds are judged by their endings, just like a container. If its top is good, its bottom is good, and if its top is foul, its bottom is foul."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: إنما الأعمال بخواتيمها، كالوعاء إذا طاب أعلاه طاب أسفله، وإذا خبث أعلاه خبث أسفله.
Ibn Hibban narrated it in Sahih Ibn Hibban (339), from Husayn bin Abdullah bin Yazid Qattan, who said, Hisham bin Ammar informed us, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, who said, Ibn Jabir told us, who said, I heard Abu Abd Rabb say, I heard Muawiya say... and then he related the hadith.Ibn Jabir is Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir Azdi, Abu Utbah Shami Darani, a trustworthy narrator among the men of the Jamaah. Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but here he explicitly stated the mode of transmission. Ibn Majah related it through his line (4199), except that he did not mention the beginning of the hadith, "Deeds are only judged by how they end."Abdullah bin Mubarak then followed him in this narration, recording it in Zuhd (596), and from him Imam Ahmad related it (16853), as did Tabarani in Al-Kabir (19/(866)). Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abu Abd Rabb, who is the ascetic of Damascus. A group of narrators related from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (5/81), saying, "Abu Abd Rabb the ascetic, whose name was Abdul-Rahman, a freedman of Ibn Ghaylan Thaqafi. He was a Roman whose name was Constantine, and when he embraced Islam he was named Abdul-Rahman. He narrated from Muawiya, and he is counted among the people of Syria, from whom the local people narrated. He was one of the wealthiest people of Damascus, but he gave away all his wealth in charity. He used to say, 'Even if a cloak flowed with gold and silver, I would not go to it to take anything from it, and if it were said that whoever touches this pillar will die, I would still go up to it and touch it.'"More than one scholar has recognized him and praised his asceticism, and none of them mentioned any criticism of him. A narrator of this description makes his hadith count as hasan.
