Abu Qatada reported,

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from the pulpit to the Ansar, "People are my outer garment, people are my outer garment, but the Ansar are my inner garment closest to my body. If people took one valley and the Ansar took a mountain pass, I would follow the pass of the Ansar. Were it not for the migration, I would have been a man from among the Ansar. Whoever is appointed over the Ansar, let him treat their good-doer well and overlook the faults of their wrongdoer. Whoever frightens them has frightened this that lies between these two," and he pointed to himself.
