He testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best houses of the Ansar are Banu al-Najjar, then Banu Abd al-Ashhal, then Banu Harith bin Khazraj, then Banu Saidah. And in all the houses of the Ansar there is good."Abu Salama said, Abu Usayd said, "Would I make a false claim against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Had I been a liar, I would have started with my own people, Banu Saidah."This reached Saad bin Ubada and he was upset. He said, "He placed us behind the others and made us the last of the four. Saddle my donkey for me so I may go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and speak with him."His nephew Sahl spoke to him and said, "Are you going to contradict the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? The Messenger of Allah knows best. Is it not enough for you to be the fourth of four?"So he turned back and said, "Allah and His Messenger know best," and he ordered his donkey to be unsaddled.
يشهد أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: خير دور الأنصار بنو النجار، ثم بنو عبد الأشهل، ثم بنو الحارث بن الخزرج، ثم بنو ساعدة. وفي كل دور الأنصار خير. قال أبو سلمة: قال أبو أسيد: أتهم أنا على رسول الله ﷺ؟ لو كنت كاذبا لبدأت بقومي، بني ساعدة، وبلغ ذلك سعد بن عبادة فوجد في نفسه. وقال: خلفنا فكنا آخر الأربع أسرجوا لي حماري آتي رسول الله ﷺ وكلمه ابن أخيه، سهل. فقال: أتذهب لترد على رسول الله ﷺ؟ ورسول الله أعلم. أوليس حسبك أن تكون رابع رابع. فرجع وقال: الله ورسوله أعلم، وأمر حماره فحل عنه.
Bukhari narrated it in "Virtues of the Ansar" (3790), and Muslim in "Virtues of the Companions" (2511-179), both from the hadith of Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, "Abu Usayd told me that he heard the Prophet ﷺ," then he mentioned it. This is the wording of Muslim, while Bukhari's account is abridged, not mentioning in it the story of Abu Usayd and Saad bin Ubada. That is, he gave up traveling to the Prophet ﷺ to respond to him, then met him on one of the roads and asked him about that, as in the hadith of Abu Humayd that follows.
