A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three dates. She gave each of the girls a date and raised one to her own mouth to eat it, but her two daughters asked her for it, so she split the date she had intended to eat between them. Her behavior impressed me, so I mentioned what she had done to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said, "Allah has surely made Paradise obligatory for her because of this," or, "He has freed her from the Fire because of it."
جاءتني مسكينة تحمل ابنتين لها، فأطعمتها ثلاث تمرات، فأعطت كل واحدة منهما تمرة ورفعت إلى فيها تمرة لتأكلها، فاستطعمتها ابنتاها، فشقت التمرة، التي كانت تريد أن تأكلها، بينهما. فأعجبني شأنها، فذكرت الذي صنعت لرسول الله ﷺ، فقال: إن الله قد أوجب لها بها الجنة، أو أعتقها بها من النار.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Righteousness and Kinship Ties (148:2630), from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Bakr, meaning Ibn Mudar, narrated to us, from Ibn Hadi, that Ziyad bin Abu Ziyad, the freed slave of Ibn Ayyash, narrated to him, from Arak bin Malik, who heard him narrating to Umar bin Abdul-Aziz, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.
