Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on a journey, he would draw lots among his wives, and the lot fell to Ayesha and Hafsa, so they both went out with him. When night came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would travel alongside Ayesha, conversing with her.Hafsa said to Ayesha, "Would you like to ride my camel tonight while I ride yours, so you can see a different view and I can too?"Ayesha replied, "Yes."So Ayesha mounted Hafsa's camel, and Hafsa mounted Ayesha's camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came up to Ayesha's camel, on which Hafsa was now riding, greeted her, and traveled along with her until they made camp.Ayesha missed his company and became jealous. When they dismounted, she began placing her foot among the idhkhir grass, saying, "Lord, send a scorpion or a snake to sting me. He is your Messenger, and I cannot say anything to him."
كان رسول الله ﷺ، إذا خرج أقرع بين نسائه، فطارت القرعة على عائشة وحفصة، فخرجتا معه جميعا، وكان رسول الله ﷺ إذا كان بالليل، سار عائشة يتحدث معها، فقالت حفصة لعائشة: ألا تركبين الليلة بعيري وأركب بعيرك، فتنظرين وأنظر؟ قالت: بلى، فركبت عائشة على بعير حفصة، ركبت حفصة على بعير عائشة، فجاء رسول الله ﷺ إلى جمل عائشة، وعليه حفصة، فسلم ثم سار معها حتى نزلوا، فافتقدته عائشة فغارت، فلما نزلوا جعلت تجعل رجلها بين الإذخر وتقول: يا رب سلط علي عقربا أو حية تلدغني، رسولك ولا أستطيع أن أقول له شيئا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5211), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2445), both by way of Abu Naeem, who said, Abdul-Wahid bin Ayman narrated to us, who said, Ibn Abu Mulayka narrated to me, from Qasim bin Muhammad, from Ayesha, who said, and then she mentioned it.As for her saying, "I put my foot between the idhkhir plants..." and so on, what she did and said was driven by her intense jealousy over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and jealousy of this kind is something forgiven. Nawawi said this in his commentary on Sahih Muslim.
