People used to time their gifts for the day of Ayesha. Ayesha said, "My fellow wives gathered at Umm Salama's and said, 'Umm Salama, by Allah, people time their gifts for the day of Ayesha, and we want the good just as Ayesha does. So ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to instruct people to send him their gifts wherever he may be, or wherever he happens to be staying.'"Umm Salama mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, but he turned away from her. When he came back to her, she mentioned it again, and he turned away from her. On the third occasion she mentioned it to him, and he said, "Umm Salama, do not hurt me concerning Ayesha. By Allah, revelation has never come down to me while I was under the blanket of any woman among you except her."
كان الناس يتحرون بهداياهم يوم عائشة، قالت عائشة: فاجتمع صواحبي عند أم سلمة، فقلن: يا أم سلمة، والله إن الناس يتحرون بهداياهم يوم عائشة، وإنا نريد الخير كما تريده عائشة، فمري رسول الله ﷺ أن يأمر الناس أن يهدوا إليه حيث ما كان، أو حيث ما دار، قالت فذكرت ذلك أم سلمة للنبي ﷺ، قالت: فأعرض عني، فلما عاد إلي ذكرت له ذاك فأعرض عني، فلما كان في الثالثة ذكرت له فقال: يا أم سلمة لا تؤذيني في عائشة، فإنه والله ما نزل علي الوحي وأنا في لحاف امرأة منكن غيرها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Virtues of the Companions (3775) from Abdullah bin Abdul-Wahhab, who said, Hammad narrated to us, who said, Hisham narrated to us, from his father, who said, so and so mentioned it.This statement of Urwa is also transmitted from Ayesha herself, as explicitly recorded by Bukhari in the Book of Gifts (2574) and by Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2441), both through the route of Abdah, who said, Hisham narrated to us, from his father, from Ayesha, with the wording, "The people used to time their gifts for the day of Ayesha's turn, seeking by that, or seeking thereby, the pleasure of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The wording is that of Bukhari.
