We were with Abu Hurairah, and he was wearing two linen garments dyed with red ochre. He blew his nose into one of them and said, "Bravo, bravo! Abu Hurairah blowing his nose into linen! There was a time when you would have seen me collapsing unconscious between the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the chamber of Ayesha. Someone would come along and place his foot on my neck, thinking I was insane, but there was no madness in me. It was nothing but hunger."
كنا عند أبي هريرة، وعليه ثوبان ممشقان من كتان، فتمخط فقال: بخ بخ أبو هريرة يتمخط في الكتان، لقد رأيتني وإني لأخر فيما بين منبر رسول الله ﷺ إلى حجرة عائشة مغشيا علي، فيجيء الجائي فيضع رجله على عنقي، ويرى أني مجنون، وما بي من جنون، ما بي إلا الجوع.
Bukhari narrated it in "Holding Fast to the Book and the Sunnah" (7324), from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad narrated to us, from Ayub, from Muhammad (that is, Ibn Sirin), who said, and then he mentioned it.Tirmidhi narrated it in Shamail (130), in the chapter on the living conditions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to show how straitened his living conditions were ﷺ, for had he possessed anything, he would not have left his companions in such a state.
