On the year of the Conquest, Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib brought Abu Sufyan bin Harb to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he embraced Islam at Marr al-Zahran.Abbas said, "Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a man who loves honor, so grant him something."He replied, "Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, and whoever shuts his door upon himself is safe."
أن رسول الله ﷺ عام الفتح جاءه العباس بن عبد المطلب بأبي سفيان بن حرب، فأسلم بمر الظهران، فقال له العباس: يا رسول الله، إن أبا سفيان رجل يحب هذا الفخر، فلو جعلت له شيئا. قال: نعم من دخل دار أبى سفيان فهو آمن، ومن أغلق عليه بابه فهو آمن.
Reported by Abu Dawud (3021), Tabarani in al-Kabir (108), and Bayhaqi in al-Dalail (5/31), all of them narrating from Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, "Zuhri narrated to me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba, from Ibn Abbas," and he related it.Its isnad is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for he is an authority in the field of military campaigns, and he stated explicitly that he heard it directly in the version of Tabarani. Abu Sufyan died in the year 32 AH, though it is also said he died after that.
