Abu Dharr said, "We left our people, the tribe of Ghifar, who used to consider the sacred month lawful. So I, my brother Unays, and our mother set out and stayed with a maternal uncle of ours. Our uncle treated us with honor and kindness, but his people grew envious of us. They said to him, 'When you are away from your family, Unays goes behind your back to them.' Our uncle came to us and repeated to us what had been said. I said, 'As for the kindness you have shown in the past, you have now spoiled it. There can be no further association between us.'So we brought our small herd of camels close, loaded our belongings on them, and our uncle covered himself with his garment and began to weep. We departed until we camped near Mecca. There Unays competed with another man, wagering our herd against an equivalent herd. They went to a soothsayer, who judged in favor of Unays, and Unays returned to us with our herd and another like it.Nephew, I had been praying three years before I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."I asked, "To whom did you pray?"He said, "To Allah."I asked, "In which direction did you face?"He said, "I faced wherever my Lord turned me. I would pray during the late evening, then at the end of the night I would lie down as though I were a discarded cloak until the sun rose over me.Then Unays said, 'I have business in Mecca, so look after things for me.' Unays went off to Mecca and was delayed in returning. When he came back I asked, 'What did you do?'He said, 'I met a man in Mecca who follows your religion. He claims that Allah has sent him.'I asked, 'What do the people say?'He replied, 'They say he is a poet, a soothsayer, a sorcerer.' Unays himself was one of the poets.Unays said, 'I have heard the words of soothsayers, and what he says is not their kind of speech. I have measured his words against the meters of poetry, and on no tongue after mine could it be called poetry. By Allah, he is truthful, and they are the liars.'I said, 'Then look after things for me, so I may go and see for myself.'I came to Mecca and approached a feeble-looking man among them. I asked, 'Where is this one whom you call the Sabian?' He pointed at me and called out, 'The Sabian!' Then the people of the valley fell upon me with every clod of earth and bone they could find until I collapsed unconscious. When I came to, I rose looking like a red idol smeared with blood.I went to Zamzam, washed the blood off myself, and drank from its water. Nephew, I remained there for thirty days and nights with no food but the water of Zamzam, and I grew so plump that the folds of my belly creased, and I felt no pang of hunger in my stomach. While the people of Mecca were on a bright moonlit night, sleep was cast over their ears so that no one was circling the House except two women of theirs who were calling upon Isaf and Naila. They came past me in their circumambulation, and I said, 'Marry one of them to the other!' They did not stop their invocations. They came past me again, and I said something coarse, not using a euphemism. They went off wailing and saying, 'If only one of our men were here!'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr met them as they were coming down. He asked, 'What is the matter with you?'They said, 'The Sabian is between the Kaabah and its coverings.'He asked, 'What did he say to you?'They said, 'He said something to us that fills the mouth.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward, touched the Black Stone, and circled the House along with his companion, then he prayed. When he had finished his prayer, I was the first to greet him with the greeting of Islam.I said, "Peace be upon you, Messenger of Allah."He said, "And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah." Then he asked, "Who are you?"I said, "From Ghifar."He brought his hand up and placed his fingers on his forehead. I said to myself, "He disliked that I traced my lineage to Ghifar." I went to take his hand, but his companion, who knew him better than I, restrained me. Then he raised his head and asked, "How long have you been here?"I said, "I have been here for thirty days and nights."He asked, "Who has been feeding you?"I said, "I have had no food except the water of Zamzam, and I have grown so plump that the folds of my belly creased, and I feel no pang of hunger in my stomach."He said, "It is blessed. It is a food that nourishes."Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah, allow me to provide his food tonight."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr went off, and I went with them. Abu Bakr opened a door and began handing us raisins from Taif, and that was the first food I ate there. Then I stayed as long as I stayed, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "A land of date palms has been shown to me, and I think it can only be Yathrib. Will you carry my message to your people for me? Perhaps Allah will benefit them through you and reward you on their account."So I came to Unays, and he asked, "What did you do?"I said, "What I did is that I have accepted Islam and believed."He said, "I have no aversion to your religion. I too have accepted Islam and believed."We came to our mother, and she said, "I have no aversion to your religion. I too have accepted Islam and believed."Then we set out together until we reached our people, Ghifar, and half of them embraced Islam. Their leader and prayer-imam was Ima bin Rahdah al-Ghifari. The other half said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrives in Medina, we will accept Islam." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, the remaining half embraced Islam. Then the tribe of Aslam came and said, "Messenger of Allah, our brothers, we accept Islam upon what they accepted Islam upon," and they accepted Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ghifar, may Allah forgive them, and Aslam, may Allah keep them in peace."
Muslim narrated it in "The Virtues of the Companions" (2473:132) from Haddab bin Khalid Azdi, who said, Sulayman bin Mughira narrated to us, Humayd bin Hilal informed us, from Abdullah bin Samit, who said, Abu Dharr said, "We set out from our people, Ghifar," and he related the rest of the account.
