Khadijah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Waraqah bin Nawfal. He replied, "I saw him in a dream wearing white garments. I think that if he were among the people of the Fire, he would not have been dressed in white."
أن خديجة سألت رسول الله ﷺ عن ورقة بن نوفل؟ فقال: قد رأيته في المنام، فرأيت عليه ثياب بياض، فأحسبه لو كان من أهل النار لم يكن عليه بياض.
Ahmad (24367) narrated it from Hasan bin Musa, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, Abu Aswad narrated to us, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it. The form of the chain is that of a mursal narration, except that the mursal narrations of the Companions are accepted by the majority. Ibn Lahia has been criticized, as is well known, but he is strengthened by the mursal narration of Zuhri.Abdul-Razzaq (5/324) narrated it from Mamar, from Zuhri, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about Waraqah bin Nawfal, as it has reached us, and he said, and he mentioned it similarly. This mursal narration strengthens the first chain.It has also been narrated as a connected chain, but it is not sound. Tirmidhi (2288) and Hakim (4/393) both narrated it through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr, who said, Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman narrated to me, from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith, and Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman is not considered strong by the scholars of hadith." As for Hakim, he said, "This hadith has a sahih chain." I say, it is not as he said, for Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman is al-Waqqasi, named after his forefather Abu Waqqas, and he is daif by the agreement of the scholars. In fact, Ibn Main accused him of lying, and Ibn Hibban said, He narrates fabrications from trustworthy narrators, and it is not permissible to rely on him. Dhahabi based his criticism on this in Talkhis Mustadrak, saying, "Matruk."As for what has been narrated from Asma bint Abu Bakr, that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about Waraqah bin Nawfal and said, "He will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a single nation," this is munkar. Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (82/24) from Muhammad bin Abdus bin Kamil al-Sarraj, who said, Abdullah bin Umar bin Aban narrated to us, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Asma bint Abu Bakr, and he mentioned it.This hadith is among those uniquely narrated by Abdullah bin Umar bin Muhammad bin Aban, and he is not the type of narrator whose unique narrations are accepted in a hadith like this.
