Miqdam bin Mad Yakrib, Amr bin Aswad, and a man from Banu Asad from the people of Qinnasrin came as a delegation to Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan.Muawiya said to Miqdam, "Have you heard that Hasan bin Ali has died?"Miqdam replied with the phrase of returning to Allah.A man said to him, "Do you consider this a calamity?"Miqdam answered, "Why should I not consider it a calamity, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed him on his lap and said, 'This one is from me, and Husayn is from Ali'?"The man from Banu Asad said, "He was a burning ember that Allah has extinguished."Miqdam then said, "As for me, I will not leave today until I have angered you and made you hear what you dislike."Then he said, "Muawiya, if I speak the truth, confirm me, and if I lie, refute me."Muawiya said, "I will do so."Miqdam said, "I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the wearing of gold?"He said, "Yes."Miqdam said, "I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the wearing of silk?"He said, "Yes."Miqdam said, "I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade wearing the skins of predatory animals and riding upon them?"He said, "Yes."Miqdam said, "By Allah, I have seen all of this in your house, Muawiya."Muawiya said, "I knew I would not escape you, Miqdam."Khalid said, Muawiya then ordered for him a gift greater than what he ordered for his two companions, and he allotted his son a stipend of two hundred. Miqdam distributed it among his companions, while the man from Banu Asad gave nothing of what he received to anyone. When this reached Muawiya, he said, "As for Miqdam, he is a generous man with an open hand. As for the man from Banu Asad, he is a man who holds tightly to what is his."
Reported by Abu Dawud (4131), Ahmad (17189), and Tabarani in al-Kabir (20/269), all through routes from Baqiya bin Walid, who said, "Buhayr bin Saad narrated to us, from Khalid bin Madan," who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Baqiya bin Walid. His use of "an" (without explicit statement of hearing) is accepted unconditionally when he narrates from Buhayr bin Saad, as stated by Ibn Abdul-Hadi in his commentary on Ilal Ibn Abu Hatim. Here he narrated from Buhayr bin Saad explicitly stating that he heard directly from him, and the majority hold that Baqiya's explicit statement of direct transmission from his teacher clears him of the charge of tadlis.Dhahabi mentioned it in al-Siyar (3/258) and said, "Its chain is strong."
