Ali said, "There is no one among the people whom I do not fear that the trial will overtake him, except for Muhammad bin Maslama, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to him, 'No trial will harm you.'"
ما أحد من الناس تدركه الفتنة إلا أنا أخاف عليه إلا محمد بن مسلمة فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: لا تضرك الفتنة.
Abu Dawud (4663) and Ibn Abu Shayba (38393) both narrated it through Yazid bin Harun, who said, Hisham informed us, from Muhammad, that is, Ibn Sirin, who said, Huzaifa said, and he mentioned it. Ibn Sirin did not meet Huzaifa bin Yaman, as Mizzi stated in Tuhfat Tahsil. This is as he said, for Muhammad bin Sirin was born two years before the end of Uthman's caliphate, and Huzaifa died at the beginning of the caliphate of Ali in the year 36 AH. Accordingly, Ibn Sirin's age at the time of Huzaifa's death would have been three or four years, but it is strengthened by what was reported as mawquf, from Thalaba bin Dubaya, who said, We went in to see Huzaifa, and he said, "I know a man whom the tribulations will not harm at all." He said, So we went out and found a tent pitched, and we went in, and there was Muhammad bin Maslama. We asked him about that, and he said, "I do not want to be drawn into any of their territories until this matter clears up, however it clears up."Abu Dawud (4664) narrated it, and Hakim (3/433-434) graded it sahih, both through Shuba, from Ashath bin Salim, from Abu Burda, from Thalaba bin Dubaya, who said, and he mentioned it. Thalaba bin Dubaya, also said to be Dubaya bin Husayn, had no one narrate from him except Abu Burda, and no one declared him trustworthy except Ibn Hibban. For this reason Hafiz said of him in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated. I did not find a corroborator for him, but what precedes it strengthens it.Muhammad bin Maslama bin Salama Awsi Ansari, Abu Abdul-Rahman Madani, the ally of Banu Abdul-Ashhal, was born twenty-two years before the start of the Prophet's mission, and he was among those named "Muhammad" in the pre-Islamic era. He accepted Islam early, at the hands of Musab bin Umayr, before Saad bin Muaz did, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paired him in brotherhood with Abu Ubayda. He witnessed the battles, Badr and those after it, except for the expedition of Tabuk, from which he stayed behind with the Prophet's ﷺ permission to remain in Madinah. He was among those who went to kill Kaab bin Ashraf and Ibn Abu Huqayq.Ibn Abdul-Barr said, He was among the finest of the Companions, and the Prophet ﷺ appointed him as his deputy over Madinah during some of his expeditions, and he was among those who withdrew from the tribulation, so he did not witness the Battle of the Camel nor Siffin. He died in Madinah in Safar of the year forty-six, at the age of seventy-seven, and it is also said that he died in the year forty-three.
