Abu Nawfal reported,

Amr bin As was overwhelmed with intense distress at the moment of death. When his son Abdullah bin Amr saw this, he said, "Father of Abdullah, why this distress, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to bring you close and entrust you with responsibilities?"He replied, "My son, that is true, and I will tell you about it. By Allah, I do not know whether it was out of love, or merely to win me over. But I bear witness concerning two men that he departed this world loving them both, the son of Sumayya, and the son of Umm Abd."When he had said this, he placed his hand where a collar would rest on his chin and said, "O Allah, You commanded us and we abandoned, You forbade us and we transgressed. Nothing avails us but Your forgiveness."These words remained on his lips until he died.
