Abdullah bin Masud climbed a tree to gather a tooth-stick from it, and as he placed his feet on it, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ laughed at the slenderness of his shins. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are heavier on the scale than Uhud."
أن عبد الله بن مسعود رقى في شجرة يجتني منها سواكا فوضع رجليه عليها، فضحك أصحاب النبي ﷺ من دقة ساقيه، فقال رسول الله ﷺ لهما أثقل في الميزان من أحد.
Bazzar (3305) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (19/28) narrated it, and Hakim (3/317) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Abu Attab Sahl bin Hammad, who said, Shuba narrated to us, from Muawiya bin Qurra, from his father Qurra bin Iyas, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Sahl bin Hammad, for he is hasan al-hadith. Haythami said in Al-Majma (9/289), "Bazzar and Tabarani narrated it, and their narrators are the narrators of the Sahih." There are other hadiths of similar meaning mentioned in the Book of Purification, in the chapter on the siwak from the arak tree.As for what was narrated from Ali, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had I appointed anyone from my nation as leader without consultation, I would have appointed Ibn Umm Abd over them," this is daif. It was narrated by Tirmidhi (3808, 3809), Ibn Majah (137), and Ahmad (566, 846), all of them through various routes from Abu Ishaq, from Harith, from Ali, who said, and he mentioned it. Harith is Ibn Abdullah al-Awar, who is daif. Tirmidhi said, "This hadith is only known through the hadith of Harith from Ali."Nasai narrated it in Al-Fadail (163), and Hakim (3/318), both through the route of Muafa bin Sulayman al-Harrani, who said, Qasim bin Maen narrated to us, from Mansur bin Mutamir, from Abu Ishaq, from Asim bin Damra, from Ali, and he mentioned it. Hakim said, sahih in chain, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not report it. Dhahabi disputed this, saying, "Asim is daif."I say, Asim bin Damra is hasan al-hadith, except that there is criticism regarding his hadith from Ali. Ibn Adi said, I have not recorded any hadith for him because of the great number of narrations he transmits from Ali that people do not corroborate him on. Ibn Hibban said, He had poor memory, and made gross errors, and he frequently attributed to Ali as his own statement what was actually a saying of the Prophet.Secondly, the correct version of this hadith's transmission is the hadith of Abu Ishaq, from Harith, from Ali, as Tirmidhi said. This was narrated from him by Israil, Thawri, and Mansur in one version, and these are the most reliable people regarding Abu Ishaq.
