The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out from Medina to fight the polytheists. My father Abdullah said to me, "Jabir, it would be best for you to remain among those staying behind in Medina until you learn what becomes of our affair. By Allah, were it not that I am leaving daughters behind me, I would have loved for you to be killed before my eyes."While I was among those who stayed behind, my paternal aunt came carrying my father and my maternal uncle, balanced together on a water-camel. She brought them into Medina to bury them in our cemeteries. Then a man caught up with us calling out, "The Prophet ﷺ commands you to return the slain so they may be buried where they fell, on the very ground where they were killed." So we took them back and buried them where they had been killed.Later, during the caliphate of Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, a man came to me and said, "Jabir bin Abdullah, by Allah, Muawiya's workmen have disturbed your father's grave. They have begun digging, and a portion of him has been exposed."I went there and found him exactly as I had buried him, unchanged except for what the killing had not spared. I covered him over again. My father had left behind a debt owed in dates, and one of his creditors pressed me hard for repayment. I went to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, "Prophet of Allah, my father was killed on such and such a day, and he left behind a debt in dates. One of his creditors is pressing me hard. I would love for you to help me with him, perhaps he will grant me a delay until the coming harvest for a portion of his dates."He said, "Yes, I will come to you, Allah willing, around midday."He came with his close companions and asked permission to enter. I had said to my wife, "The Prophet ﷺ is coming to me today at midday. Do not let me see you, and do not disturb the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in my house with anything, and do not speak to him."He came in, and I spread out a mat and a cushion for him. He laid down his head and slept.I said to a freedman of mine, "Slaughter this young goat," which was a fattened domestic one, "Be quick and swift, finish with it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wakes, and I will be with you."We kept working at it until we finished while he was still sleeping. I said to him, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he wakes, will call for water for purification, and I fear that when he finishes he will rise to leave. Do not let him finish his ablution before you set the goat before him."When he rose, he said, "Jabir, bring me water for purification."He had not finished his ablution before I had set the goat before him. He looked at me and said, "It seems you knew of our love for meat. Call Abu Bakr for me."Then he summoned his close companions who were with him, and they came in. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached out with his hands and said, "In the name of Allah. Eat."They ate until they were satisfied, and a great deal of meat was left over.By Allah, the gathering of Banu Salama were watching him, and he was dearer to them than their own eyes, yet none of them would approach him for fear of disturbing him. When they finished, he stood, and his companions stood and went out before him. He used to say, "Leave my back clear for the angels."I followed them until they reached the threshold of the door. My wife showed her face from behind a partition of palm-fiber matting in the house and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray for me and for my husband, may Allah send blessings upon you."He said, "May Allah bless you and your husband."Then he said, "Bring me that creditor of mine who has been pressing hard in his demand."The man came, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Will you grant Jabir bin Abdullah a delay," meaning a respite, "for a portion of the debt owed by his father, until this coming harvest?"The man said, "I will not do it," and made excuses, saying, "It is the wealth of orphans."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Where is Jabir?"I said, "Here I am, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Measure out for him, for Allah will fulfill it."I looked up at the sky, and the sun had already begun to decline. He said, "Time for prayer, Abu Bakr."They hurried off to the mosque. I said, "Bring your containers close."I measured out the ajwa dates for him, and Allah paid the debt in full, and there remained for us such and such of the dates. I came running to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his mosque as if I were a flying spark. I found that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already prayed.I said, "Messenger of Allah, did you not see that I measured out the dates for my creditor and Allah paid him in full, and there remained for us such and such of the dates?"He said, "Where is Umar bin Khattab?"Umar came hurrying. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ask Jabir bin Abdullah about his creditor and his dates."Umar said, "I will not ask him. I already knew that Allah would fulfill it when I was told that Allah would fulfill it."The Prophet ﷺ repeated this to him three times, and each time Umar said, "I will not ask him." And Umar would not be addressed again after the third time. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Jabir, what did your creditor and your dates do?"I said, "Allah paid him in full, and such and such of the dates remained for us."I returned to my wife and said, "Did I not forbid you to speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"She said, "Did you think Allah would bring the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to my house, then have him leave without my asking him to bless me and my husband before he departed?"
Ahmad (15281) narrated it from Affan, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, Aswad bin Qays narrated to us, from Nabeeh Anazi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it in full.Abu Dawud (1533) also narrated it, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (916, 984), both of them through the route of Aswad bin Qays, narrating part of it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. His saying "haste, haste" means, hurry, hurry.
