Ibn Abu Mulayka reported,

There was some friction between them, meaning between Ibn Abbas and Ibn Zubayr. So I went early to Ibn Abbas and said, "Do you intend to fight Ibn Zubayr and thereby violate the sanctuary of Allah?"He replied, "Allah forbid. Allah has decreed that Ibn Zubayr and the Banu Umaya would be the ones to violate it, but by Allah, I will never violate it."He continued, the people said, "Pledge allegiance to Ibn Zubayr."I said, "And who is more deserving of this matter than him? As for his father, he was the close companion of the Prophet ﷺ," meaning Zubayr. "As for his grandfather, he was the companion of the cave," meaning Abu Bakr. "His mother is the woman of the two waist-bands," meaning Asma. "His maternal aunt is the Mother of the Believers," meaning Ayesha. "His paternal aunt is the wife of the Prophet ﷺ," meaning Khadijah. "And the paternal aunt of the Prophet ﷺ is his grandmother," meaning Safiyya. "Moreover, he is chaste in Islam and a reciter of the Quran. By Allah, if they joined ties with me, they would be joining ties with a close relative, and if they put me in authority, they would be putting noble equals in authority. Yet he has preferred over me the Tuwaytat, the Usamat, and the Humaydat," meaning subclans of Banu Asad, namely Banu Tuwayt, Banu Usama, and Banu Asad. "Indeed, Ibn Abu al-As has come forward strutting confidently," meaning Abdul-Malik bin Marwan, "while he has tucked his tail," meaning Ibn Zubayr.

عن ابن أبي مليكة قال

وكان بينهما شيء- أي بين ابن عباس وابن الزبير-، فغدوت على ابن عباس فقلت: أتريد أن تقاتل ابن الزبير، فتحل حرم الله؟ فقال: معاذ الله، إن الله كتب ابن الزبير وبني أمية محلين، وإني والله لا أحله أبدا، قال: قال الناس: بايع لابن الزبير، فقلت: وأين بهذا الأمر عنه؟ أما أبوه فحواري النبي ﷺ، يريد الزبير، وأما جده فصاحب الغار يريد، أبا بكر، وأمه فذات النطاق، يريد أسماء، وأما خالته فأم المؤمنين، يريد عائشة، وأما عمته فزوج النبي ﷺ، يريد خديجة، وأما عمة النبي ﷺ فجدته، يريد صفية، ثم عفيف في الإسلام، قارئ للقرآن، والله إن وصلوني وصلوني من قريب، وإن ربوني ربوني أكفاء كرام، فآثر علي التويتات والأسامات والحميدات، يريد أبطنا من بني أسد: ابن تويت، وبني أسامة، وبني أسد، إن ابن أبي العاص برز يمشي القدمية، يعني عبد الملك بن مروان، وإنه لوى ذنبه، يعني ابن الزبير.
