Damra bin Thalaba came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing two garments from the cloths of Yemen. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Damra, do you think these two garments of yours will admit you into Paradise?"He replied, "If you seek forgiveness for me, Messenger of Allah, I will not sit down until I have taken them off."The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, forgive Damra bin Thalaba."He hurried off and removed them from himself.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (18979), and Bukhari in Tarikh al-Kabir (4/337), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2740), all of them through routes from Baqiya bin Walid, who said, Sulayman bin Sulaym Kinani told us, Yahya bin Jabir Tai told us, I heard Damra bin Thalaba say, and then he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Baqiya bin Walid, for his hadith is hasan when he states his sources explicitly, and this is one of those cases, since he explicitly stated the mode of transmission in Bukhari's Tarikh al-Kabir. Haythami said in Majma (5/136), "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy, except that Baqiya practiced tadlis." Yahya bin Jabir is Ibn Hassan Tai, who is described as frequently transmitting with mursal chains, but he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, as recorded by Bukhari in his Tarikh.A note of benefit, Yahya bin Jabir bin Hassan Tai, Abu Amr Himsi the judge, was placed by Hafiz in the sixth tier, which consists of those for whom no meeting with any companion has been established. The correct view is that he belongs to the fifth tier, because his hearing from the companion Damra bin Thalaba has been established, as in this hadith, and likewise his hearing from Miqdam bin Mad Yakrib
has been established, as recorded by Ahmad (17186).
