I was in the masjid while Marwan was delivering a sermon, and Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, he never appointed anyone from his own family as successor."Marwan said, "You are the one about whom this was revealed, 'And the one who says to his parents, Shame on you both'" [Ahqaf 46:17].Abdul-Rahman replied, "You lie. But the Messenger of Allah cursed your father."

Bazzar (2273) narrated it from Yusuf bin Musa, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Mighra told us, Ismail bin Abu Khalid told us, from Abdullah Bahi, the freed slave of Zubayr, who said, and then he related it. Its isnad is hasan because of Yusuf bin Musa Qattan and his teacher Abdul-Rahman bin Mighra, and Abdullah Bahi, all of them being hasan al-hadith. Haythami said in Majma (5/214), Bazzar narrated it, and its isnad is hasan. His statement, "while Marwan was giving a sermon," refers to the pledge of allegiance to Yazid bin Muawiya. Marwan said, "Allah has shown the Commander of the Faithful" (meaning Muawiya) "a good view regarding Yazid, and if he appoints him as his successor, then Abu Bakr and Umar have done likewise." Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr then responded to him.
