They went out with the Prophet ﷺ to a meal to which they had been invited, and there was Husayn playing in the alley. The Prophet ﷺ went ahead of the group and stretched out his hands. The boy began running this way and that, while the Prophet ﷺ laughed with him until he caught him. He placed one hand under his chin and the other on the back of his head, then kissed him and said, "Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Allah loves whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is one of the grandsons."
أنهم خرجوا مع النبي ﷺ إلى طعام دعوا له. فإذا حسين يلعب في السكة. قال: فتقدم النبي ﷺ أمام القوم وبسط يديه. فجعل الغلام يفر ههنا وههنا ويضاحكه النبي ﷺ حتى أخذه. فجعل إحدى يديه تحت ذقنه، والأخرى في فأس رأسه فقبله. وقال: حسين مني وأنا من حسين أحب الله من أحب حسينا. حسين سبط من الأسباط.
It was narrated by Tirmidhi (3775) and Ibn Majah (144) - and this is his wording -, and Ahmad (17561), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (6971), and Hakim (3/177), all of them through routes from Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Saeed bin Abu Rashid, from Yaala bin Murrah, who related it. No one other than Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym narrated from Saeed bin Abu Rashid, and no one confirmed him as reliable other than Ibn Hibban, and for this reason Ibn Hajar said of him, "acceptable," meaning where he is corroborated, and indeed he has been corroborated.It was narrated by Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (364), and Fasawi in al-Marifah wal-Tarikh (1/308), and Tabarani in al-Kabir (3/20), all of them through the route of Abu Salih Abdullah bin Salih, who said, Muawiya bin Salih narrated to us, from Rashid bin Saad, from Yaala bin Murrah, who said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we were invited to a meal, and there was Husayn playing in the road. The Prophet ﷺ hurried ahead of the people, then spread out his hands, and Husayn began running back and forth, this way and that, while the Prophet played and laughed with him, until he caught him. He put one of his hands under his chin and the other between his head and his ears, then embraced him and kissed him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Husayn is from me and I am from him. Allah loves whoever loves him. Hasan and Husayn are two grandsons among the grandsons.'"Abdullah bin Salih is Abu Salih al-Misri, the scribe of Layth. There is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan when corroborated, and likewise his teacher Muawiya bin Salih (who is Ibn Hudayr al-Himsi). With this corroboration, the hadith rises to the level of hasan, Allah willing. Tirmidhi graded it hasan, saying, "This is a hasan hadith."
