By Allah, Hasan bin Ali met Muawiya with battalions like mountains. Amr bin As said, "I see battalions that will not turn back until they kill their counterparts."Muawiya, who was by Allah the better of the two men, replied to him, "Amr, if these kill those, and those kill these, who will be left to handle the people's affairs, who will be left for their women, who will be left for their weak ones?"So he sent to him two men from Quraysh, from Banu Abd Shams, Abdul-Rahman bin Samura and Abdullah bin Amir bin Kurayz, and said, "Go to this man and present this offer to him, speak with him, and request from him."They went to him, entered upon him, spoke with him, conveyed the message, and made the request.Hasan bin Ali said to them, "We, the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, have obtained some of this wealth, and this nation has shed blood recklessly."They said, "He offers you such and such, and requests from you and asks of you."He asked, "Who will guarantee this for me?"They replied, "We will guarantee it for you."He did not ask them about anything except that they said, "We will guarantee it for you." So he made peace with him.Hasan said, "I heard Abu Bakra say, 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit, with Hasan bin Ali at his side. He would turn to the people once and to him another time, saying, "This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factions of the Muslims."'"Abu Abdullah said, Ali bin Abdullah said to me, "It is only through this hadith that Hasan's hearing from Abu Bakra is established for us."
Bukhari related it in the Chapter on Reconciliation (2704), from Abdullah bin Muhammad, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Musa, who said, I heard Hasan say, and then he mentioned it.In another wording, "When Hasan bin Ali marched against Muawiya with the troops, Amr bin As said to Muawiya, I see a troop that will not turn back until its rear guard has passed. Muawiya said, Who will look after the Muslims' dependents? Amr said, I will. Then Abdullah bin Amir and Abdul-Rahman bin Samura said, Let us meet him and propose reconciliation to him..." Then he mentioned the hadith of Abu Bakra.Bukhari related it in the Chapter on Tribulations (7109), from Ali bin Abdullah, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, who said, Israel Abu Musa narrated to us with it.
