Hassan asked the Prophet's ﷺ permission to compose satirical verses against the polytheists. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "But what about my own lineage among them?"Hassan replied, "I will pull you out from among them as a hair is pulled from dough."His father said, "I went to insult Hassan in the presence of Ayesha, but she said, 'Do not insult him, for he used to defend the Prophet ﷺ.'"
استأذن حسان النبي ﷺ في هجاء المشركين، قال: كيف بنسبي؟ فقال حسان: لأسلنك منهم كما تسل الشعرة من العجين. وعن أبيه قال: ذهبت أسب حسان عند عائشة، فقالت: لا تسبه، فإنه كان ينافح عن النبي ﷺ.
Bukhari narrated it in Manaqib (3531) and Muslim in Fadail al-Sahabah (2489), both of them from Uthman bin Abu Shayba, who said, "Abdah narrated to us, from Hisham, from his father, from Ayesha," who said what follows, and she related it.In another version, Hassan said, "Messenger of Allah, give me leave concerning Abu Sufyan." He said, "What about my kinship with him?" Hassan said, "By the One who has honored you, I will draw you out from among them just as a hair is drawn out of dough." Then Hassan said, "Indeed the pinnacle of glory in the family of Hashim belongs to the sons of the daughter of Makhzum, while your father is the slave." This is from his poem.Muslim narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (2489) from Yahya bin Yahya, who said, "Yahya bin Zakariya informed us," from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, who said, "Hassan said..." and she related it.Nawawi said in his commentary (16/47-48), "After this there is a line that Muslim did not mention, though mentioning it completes the sense and the intended meaning. It is, 'And those whom the sons of Zuhra bore among them are noble, while your old women never came close to glory.' What is meant by 'the daughter of Makhzum' is Fatimah bint Amr bin Aaid bin Imran bin Makhzum, the mother of Abdullah, Zubayr, and Abu Talib. And what he means by this Abu Sufyan, the one mentioned and satirized, is Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib, who is a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ. He used to harm the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims at that time, then he embraced Islam and his Islam was excellent. As for his saying, 'the sons of Zuhra bore among them,' he means Hala bint Wahb bin Abd Manaf, the mother of Hamza and Safiya. As for his saying, 'and your father is the slave,' it is an insult directed at Abu Sufyan bin Harith. Its meaning is that the mother of Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib, the father of this Abu Sufyan, was Sumayya bint Mawhab, and Mawhab was a slave belonging to the Banu Abd Manaf. Likewise, the mother of Abu Sufyan bin Harith was the same, and this is what he means by his saying, 'and your old women never came close to glory.'" End of quote.In another version, from Urwa, "Hassan bin Thabit was among those who spoke excessively against Ayesha, so I cursed him, and she said, 'Son of my sister, leave him be, for he used to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"Muslim narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (2487) through several routes from Abu Usama, from Hisham, from his father, that Hassan said this, and he related it.
