We were sitting with Hudhayfah when a man said, "If I had lived in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have fought alongside him and shown my mettle."Hudhayfah replied, "Would you really have done that? Let me tell you about the night of the Confederates with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A bitter wind struck us, along with terrible cold. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Is there a man who will bring me news of the enemy? Allah will make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection.'We remained silent, and not one of us answered him. Then he said again, 'Is there a man who will bring us news of the enemy? Allah will make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection.'We remained silent, and not one of us answered him. Then he said a third time, 'Is there a man who will bring us news of the enemy? Allah will make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection.'We remained silent, and not one of us answered him. Then he said, 'Get up, Hudhayfah, and bring us news of the enemy.'I had no choice but to rise, since he had called me by name.He said, 'Go and bring me news of the enemy, but do not alarm them against me.'When I turned away from him, it was as though I were walking in a warm bath, until I reached them. I saw Abu Sufyan warming his back at the fire. I placed an arrow on the bowstring, intending to shoot him, but then I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Do not alarm them against me.' Had I shot him, I would have hit him.So I returned, walking again as though through a warm bath. When I reached him, I gave him the news of the enemy, and as soon as I finished, the cold seized me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed me with the spare part of a cloak he was wearing while praying in it, and I kept on sleeping until morning. When morning came, he said, 'Get up, you sleeper.'"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1788:99) from Zuhayr bin Harb and Ishaq bin Ibrahim, both from Jareer, from Amash, from Ibrahim Taymi, from his father (Yazid bin Sharik), who said, and then he mentioned it. It has been narrated from Huzaifa, who said, "They said, O Messenger of Allah, if only you would appoint a successor." He said, "If a successor is appointed over you and you disobey him, you will be punished. But whatever Huzaifa tells you, believe him, and whatever Abdullah teaches you to recite, recite it."Abdullah said, "I said to Ishaq bin Isa, 'They say this is from Abu Waail.'" He said, "No, it is from Zazan, if Allah wills."Tirmidhi narrated it (3812) from Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman (that is, Darimi), who said, Ishaq bin Isa informed us, from Sharik, from Abu Yaqzan (that is, Uthman bin Umayr), from Zazan, from Huzaifa, and then he mentioned it. He said, "This is a hasan hadith, and it is the hadith of Sharik." Abu Yaqzan Uthman bin Umayr is daif by the agreement of the scholars, and Sharik has poor memory, and he alone transmitted it.
