On the day of Uhud, the polytheists were soundly defeated. Then Iblis cried out, "Servants of Allah, beware your rear!" So the front of the Muslim ranks turned back upon their rear, and they began striking one another.Hudhayfa looked and saw that it was his own father among them. He called out, "Servants of Allah, my father, my father!"She said, "By Allah, they did not stop until they had killed him."Hudhayfa said, "May Allah forgive you."My father (meaning Hisham, whose father is Urwa) said, "By Allah, a trace of goodness from that incident remained with Hudhayfa until he met Allah ."
Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on the Virtues of the Ansar (3824) from Ismail bin Khalil, from Salama bin Raja, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha who said, then he mentioned it. In another wording, "Huzaifa said, 'May Allah forgive you.' Urwa said, it never ceased to be a concern for Huzaifa..." Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on the Beginning of Creation (3290) through another route from Hisham with the same account. His statement, "By Allah, it never ceased to be a concern for Huzaifa because of it," means because of this remark and its cause, namely Huzaifa's statement, "May Allah forgive you," in addition to his giving away the blood money for his father to the Muslims as charity. His statement, "the last of you," means, be cautious of the last of you and support them, and according to this the address would be to the Muslims. Or the meaning could be, kill the last of you, meaning the polytheists who had rushed upon you and caught up with you. All of this falls under the category of confusion and deception, and indeed this is what happened, the swords became intermixed and they ended up killing one another. Among those killed in that confusion was Yaman, the father of Huzaifa.
