Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf reported,
Concerning the man who passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was conversing privately with Jibreel 
, Abu Salama claimed that the man avoided drawing near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, fearing that he might overhear the conversation.The next morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "What kept you from greeting me when you passed by me last night?"The man replied, "I saw you speaking privately with someone, and I feared you would dislike my coming close to you both."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you know who that man was?"He answered, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "That was Jibreel . Had you greeted him, he would have returned your greeting."I have heard from someone other than Abu Salama that this man was Haritha bin Numan.

عن الرجل الذي مر برسول الله ﷺ وهو يناجي جبريل عليه السلام، فزعم أبو سلمة أنه تجنب أن يدنو من رسول الله ﷺ ثم تخوفا أن يسمع حديثه، فلما أصبح قال له رسول الله ﷺ: ما منعك أن تسلم إذ مررت بي البارحة؟ قال: رأيتك تناجي رجلا، فخشيت أن تكره أن أدنو منكما. قال: وهل تدري من الرجل؟ قال: لا. قال: فذلك جبريل عليه السلام، ولو سلمت لرد السلام. وقد سمعت من غير أبي سلمة أنه حارثة بن النعمان.
Ahmad (16129) narrated it from Affan, who said, Wahib (that is, Ibn Khalid) narrated to us, Musa bin Uqba narrated to us, Abu Salama narrated to me, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.It is narrated from Haritha bin Numan, who said, "I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Jibreel was with him, sitting among those seated there. I greeted him, then passed on. When I returned and the Prophet ﷺ had finished, he said, 'Did you see the one who was with me?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'That was Jibreel, and he has returned your greeting.'"Ahmad (23677) narrated it from Abdul-Razzaq, and it is also in his Musannaf (20545), he said, Mamar informed us, from Zuhri, Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabia informed us, from Haritha bin Numan, and he related it.Haythami said in Majma (9/313), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and the men of their chains are the men of sahih."Ibn Hajar graded its chain sahih in Isaba (1542). But Ibn Abu Hatim said in Ilal (2609), "I asked my father about a hadith narrated by Mamar, from Zuhri, from Abdullah bin Amir, from Jabir, from the Prophet ﷺ, that Haritha bin Numan passed by the Prophet ﷺ while he was conversing privately with Jibreel..." and he related the hadith.My father said, "Zubaydi narrated it, saying, from Zuhri, from Amra bint Abdul-Rahman, that Haritha passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ..." as a mursal narration, and that is the sahih version. Zubaydi has a more reliable memory than Mamar."It was said to my father, "Zubaydi has a more reliable memory than Mamar?"He said, "He was more precise than Mamar with regard to Zuhri specifically, for he heard from Zuhri by dictation, then went out to Rusafa, and heard from him there as well."As for the phrase "from Jabir," this is how it appears in the printed editions, but the correct reading is probably "Haritha."
