On the day of Hudaybiyyah we were one thousand four hundred. The Prophet ﷺ said to us, "Today you are the best people on earth."Jabir said, "If I could still see, I would show you the exact spot of the tree."
كنا يوم الحديبية ألفا وأربعمائة، فقال لنا النبي ﷺ: أنتم اليوم خير أهل الأرض. وقال جابر: لو كنت أبصر، لأريتكم موضع الشجرة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4154), and Muslim in the Book of Leadership (1856-71), both through the route of Sufyan, from Amr, from Jabir, who said, and then he related it. The wording given is Muslim's. His saying, "If only I could see," is because he had gone blind toward the end of his life.
