The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The soul of the believer remains suspended as long as he has an outstanding debt."
حدثنا أبو داود الحفري عن سفيان عن سعد بن إبراهيم عن ابن أبي سلمة عن أبيه
قال رسول الله ﷺ نفس المؤمن معلقة ما كان عليه دين
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud Hafari is Umar bin Saad bin Ubayd, who is trustworthy. Ibn Abu Salama is Majishun, Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah bin Abu Salama, and both he and his father are trustworthy.The hadith was narrated by Tirmidhi, 3/380, number 1078, in the Book of Funerals, chapter on what has been said about the believer's soul being suspended, and he graded it hasan. Ibn Majah, 2/806, number 2413, in the Book of Charities, chapter on strictness regarding debt. Also by Hakim, 2/26-27, who graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him. And Bayhaqi, 6/49.
