The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Among the Children of Israil there was a man called Jurayj who used to worship in his hermitage. One day his mother came to him and called out, 'Jurayj, my son, look out at me so I can speak to you. I am your mother, look out at me.'He said, 'My Lord, my prayer or my mother?' Then he turned back to his prayer. She returned and called him repeatedly, saying, 'Jurayj, my son, look out at me.'He said, 'My Lord, my prayer or my mother?' Then he turned back to his prayer. So she said, 'O Allah, do not let him die until he sees the face of a prostitute.'There was a shepherdess who used to graze her family's sheep, then take shelter in the shade of his hermitage. She committed fornication and was apprehended, having become pregnant. The custom among them was that whoever committed fornication was put to death. They asked her, 'By whom?'She replied, 'By Jurayj, the man of the hermitage.'So they came with axes and shovels and called out, 'Jurayj, you hypocrite.' Then they said, 'Come down.'He refused and went on with his prayer. So they began tearing down his hermitage. When he saw that, he came down. They put a rope around his neck and around hers and began parading them through the people. He placed his finger on her belly and said, 'Boy, who is your father?'The infant answered, 'My father is so-and-so, the shepherd of the sheep.'So they kissed him and said, 'If you wish, we will rebuild your hermitage in gold and silver.'He said, 'Restore it as it was.'"
