I bear witness regarding Abu Hurairah and Abu Saeed that they both testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah grants respite until a third of the night has passed, then He descends and says, 'Is there anyone supplicating, that he may be answered? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness, that he may be forgiven?'"Affan said, Abu Awana used to narrate to us hadiths from Abu Ishaq, but it later reached me that he said, "I heard them from Israil," and I think this hadith is among them.
حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا أبو عوانة عن أبي إسحاق
أشهد على أبي هريرة وأبي سعيد أنهما شهدا على رسول الله ﷺ أنه قال إن الله يمهل حتى يذهب ثلث الليل ثم يهبط فيقول هل من داع فيستجاب له هل من مستغفر فيغفر له و قال عفان وكان أبو عوانة حدثنا بأحاديث عن أبي إسحاق ثم بلغني بعد أنه قال سمعتها من إسرائيل وأحسب هذا الحديث فيها
Its isnad is sahih, despite the confusion in Abu Awana's narration, because Affan did not state it with certainty. Bukhari related it in 2/66, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on supplication and prayer in the last part of the night, and Muslim in 1/521, number 758, in the Prayer of Travelers, chapter on encouragement to supplication and remembrance in the last part of the night, and Abu Dawud in 2/34, number 1315, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on which part of the night is best, and Tirmidhi in 5/526, number 3498, in the Book of Supplications, chapter 79, and he said, hasan sahih.
