My maternal grandfather Abu Habiba told me that he entered the house while Uthman was besieged inside it, and he heard Abu Hurayra ask Uthman for permission to speak. Uthman granted him permission, so he stood, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'You will encounter after me trial and discord,'" or he said, "'discord and trial.'"Someone among the people said to him, "Who shall we turn to then, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Hold fast to the trustworthy one and his companions," and he was pointing to Uthman as he said this.
حدثنا عفان حدثنا وهيب
حدثني جدي أبو أمي أبو حبيبة أنه دخل الدار وعثمان محصور فيها وأنه سمع أبا هريرة يستأذن عثمان في الكلام فأذن له فقام فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إنكم تلقون بعدي فتنة واختلافا أو قال اختلافا وفتنة فقال له قائل من الناس فمن لنا يا رسول الله قال عليكم بالأمين وأصحابه وهو يشير إلى عثمان بذلك
