The Messenger of Allah ﷺ the old man clings to the love of two things, a long life and abundant wealth.
وقال رسول الله ﷺ الشيخ على حب اثنتين طول الحياة وكثرة المال
A sahih hadith. Bukhari narrated it from Abu Hurairah, and he also narrated it in the chapter on the Softening of the Hearts from Ali bin Madini with the wording, "The heart of the old man remains youthful in attachment to two things, love of long life and love of wealth." Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat from Abu Tahir Ibn Sarh, Harmala bin Yahya, and Zuhayr bin Harb. Tirmidhi narrated it in the chapter on Asceticism from Qutayba, and Ibn Majah narrated it in the chapter on the reward of glorifying Allah from Abu Marwan.The hadith contains figurative language and metaphor, and its meaning is that the old man's heart is completely attached to wealth, holding firmly to that love just as the strength of a young man holds firm in his youth. Imam Nawawi said, "This is the correct interpretation," though it was said that another interpretation exists which is not accepted. End.
