The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she owned. She tied it up and neither fed it nor set it free to forage among the creatures of the earth, until it died of starvation."
وقال رسول الله ﷺ دخلت النار امرأة من جراء هرة لها ربطتها فلا هي أطعمتها ولا هي أرسلتها ترمم من خشاش الأرض حتى ماتت هزلا
A sahih hadith. It is found in Saheefah Mufradah, number 88, though Bukhari did not narrate it through this route. Muslim narrated it [8:35 S / 2:292 Bulaq] through this route, and before that he narrated it from the hadith of Saeed Maqburi from Abu Hurairah. He also narrated it [2:325 Bulaq] from the hadith of Humayd from Abu Hurairah.This has already passed, in similar wording, at number 7538, through the narration of Abu Salama from Abu Hurairah, where we explained that Bukhari narrated it in 6:254-255 through the narration of Saeed Maqburi, but did not mention its wording, instead referring it back to the hadith of Ibn Umar before it, which carries the same meaning.His words, "because of a female cat of hers," in Muslim's version there is an addition, "or a male cat." This addition is also found in Saheefah Mufradah, but there its wording is given as "or a female cat," which would be a meaningless repetition. This is evidently a confusion introduced by a copyist or a printer.His words, "turammu," mean that she takes it with her lips. In some copies of Muslim it appears as "tarmaramu," with the second r vowelled with a kasra, as Nawawi reported. In Saheefah Mufradah it appears as "tataqahhamu," with a qaf and a ha, though this is not found in any of the manuscripts I have examined. It comes from the expression, "so-and-so aqhama towards food, iqhaman," meaning he craved it.As for "khashash of the earth" (with the kha and shin both vowelled with fatha, unshortened), it refers to the earth's crawling creatures, its insects, its small animals, and the like.
