The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The spoils of war were not made lawful for those who came before us. That is because Allah saw our weakness and our incapacity, so He made them lawful and wholesome for us."
وقال رسول الله ﷺ لم تحل الغنائم لمن قبلنا ذلك بأن الله رأى ضعفنا وعجزنا فطيبها لنا
This is also sahih. It is found in Al-Sahifa Al-Mufrada, number 87, and is part of a hadith that will come later at 8221. It is established in the manuscripts of the Musnad, and in Al-Sahifa Al-Mufrada, as a separate hadith at this location, and is then included within the hadith that follows. Its sourcing will be given there, Allah willing, noting that Muslim narrated it through the route of Al-Sahifa, and that Bukhari narrated it through its route as well, but through the narration of Abdullah bin Mubarak from Mamar. In Al-Sahifa Al-Mufrada it reads "for those who came before us," and the word "came" is not established in the manuscripts of the Musnad at that location. See 7427.
