The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The angels take turns among you, some by night and some by day." He also said, "They gather together at the Fajr prayer and the Asr prayer. Then those who spent the night among you ascend to Him, and He asks them, though He knows best, 'How did you leave My servants?' They reply, 'We left them while they were praying, and we came to them while they were praying.'"
وقال رسول الله ﷺ الملائكة يتعاقبون فيكم ملائكة بالليل وملائكة بالنهار وقال يجتمعون في صلاة الفجر وصلاة العصر ثم يعرج إليه الذين باتوا فيكم فيسألهم وهو أعلم كيف تركتم عبادي فقالوا تركناهم وهم يصلون وأتيناهم وهم يصلون
This is a sahih hadith. It is in al-Sahifah al-Mufradah under number 80, and something similar has already passed at 7483, where we explained that Bukhari and Muslim narrated it from the copy of Aaraj. See also 7601. Its beginning in [manuscript] H reads, "The Messenger of Allah said to me..." The word "to me" is not mentioned in any of the manuscripts. As for his statement "and He knows best," in al-Sahifah al-Mufradah it reads "and He knows them best," but the addition of the word "them" is not found in any of the manuscripts of the Musnad.
