The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My case is like that of a man who kindled a fire. When it lit up everything around it, the moths and these creatures that fall into fire began falling into it, and he kept trying to hold them back, but they overpowered him and plunged into it anyway. That is my case and yours. I am seizing you by your waistbands to keep you from the Fire, saying, 'Come away from the Fire! Come away from the Fire! Come away!' But you overpower me and plunge into it."
وقال رسول الله ﷺ مثلي كمثل رجل استوقد نارا فلما أضاءت ما حولها جعل الفراش وهذه الدواب التي يقعن في النار يقعن فيها وجعل يحجزهن ويغلبنه فتتقحم فيها قال فذلكم مثلي ومثلكم أنا آخذ بحجزكم عن النار هلم عن النار هلم عن النار هلم فتغلبوني تقتحمون فيها
This is a sahih hadith. It appears in the individual Sahifah, numbered 4. As for the hadith preceding it there, numbered 3, Imam Ahmad did not narrate it as part of the Sahifah, and it is the hadith about the miser and the one who gives charity. Imam Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad four times, at length and in abridged form, numbers 7331, 7477, 9045, and 10780, but in none of these did he narrate it through Hammam bin Munabbih. Likewise, the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate it through the route of the Sahifah.As for this hadith, "My likeness is that of a man who kindled a fire..." Muslim narrated it through the route of the Sahifah [7:63–64 S / 2:206–207 Bulaq] from Muhammad bin Rafi, from Abdul-Razzaq. It has already passed in the Musnad at 7318 m3 in similar form, abridged, from the copy of Aaraj, and we explained there that Bukhari narrated it, 6:333–334 Fath, and Muslim, 2:206 [Bulaq], both from the copy of Aaraj.His saying, "which fall into the fire," in Muslim's narration reads "which are in the fire" without the word "fall." His saying, "and it plunges into it," in the narration of Muslim and the individual Sahifah reads "and they plunge into it," which is also a variant reading in the margin of m. In Jami al-Masanid it reads "they plunge" without the letter fa.The third occurrence of the word "come here" is not mentioned in Muslim, the individual Sahifah, or Jami al-Masanid, while in m it reads "come here from the fire," then above the words "from the fire" a note indicating a variant reading was written. His saying, "you plunge into it," is what is established in h and in a variant reading in the margin of m, while in Muslim, the individual Sahifah, and m it reads "you plunge."
