The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out on an expedition and said, "If you find so-and-so and so-and-so," naming two men from Quraysh, "burn them with fire."Then, when we were about to set out, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I had ordered you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so with fire, but no one punishes with fire except Allah . So if you find them, kill them."
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it (6:104-105, Fath) from Qutayba, from Layth, with the same wording, but without mentioning his statement "to two men from Quraysh." Hafiz mentioned in Fath that Tirmidhi related it from Qutayba with this addition. And he mentioned on page 135 that it is one of the reports unique to Bukhari, not found in Muslim.
