We were with the Prophet ﷺ on either a Hajj or an Umra when a swarm of locusts came toward us. Affan said in his version, "A swarm of locusts came toward us." We began striking them with our sticks and whips and killing them, but then we hesitated and said, "What are we doing? We are in the state of ihram!" So we asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, "There is no harm in hunting creatures of the sea."
Its isnad is daif. Abu Muhazzim, with a kasra on the doubled zay, is very daif, as we explained at 7563, and the hadith appears in Jami al-Masanid wal-Sunan 7:518, taken from this very place. It is also found in the tafsir of Ibn Kathir 3:244, where he likewise attributed it to Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah, then said, Abu Muhazzim is daif.Ar-Rijl, with a kasra on the ra and no vowel on the jim, means a large swarm of locusts.
