Its chain of transmission is sahih, in fact it has two chains, for Imam Ahmad narrated it from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Hammad, that is, Ibn Salama, then he narrated it from Affan, from Hammad. It appears in Jami al-Masanid 7:338 at this location. Abu Dawud narrated it, 267, from Musa bin Ismail, from Hammad bin Salama, with the same wording.Bukhari narrated it, 6:101, from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Ghundar, from Shuba, from Muhammad bin Ziyad. Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih, 134 in our edition, by way of Rabi bin Muslim, from Muhammad bin Ziyad. Ibn Hibban said, "What is meant in this report are the captives whom the Muslims take captive from the abode of shirk, bound together in chains, and led to the abodes of Islam, until they submit and enter Paradise."This is the correct meaning. That is why Bukhari placed it under the heading, "Chapter on captives in chains," and Abu Dawud under the heading, "Chapter on the captive who is bound."
