Its chain of transmission is sahih. Musa bin Ali bin Rabah, his reliability was established earlier at 4375, and we add here that Ibn Saad gave his biography at 203/2/7, and Ibn Abu Hatim at 153/1/4-154. His father Ali - with damma on the ayn - bin Rabah, his reliability was established earlier at 4375, and we add here that Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography at 186/1/3.Abdul-Aziz bin Marwan bin Hakam bin Abu As, the father of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz, was a trustworthy Follower. Ibn Saad, Nasai, and others affirmed his reliability. Ibn Saad gave his biography at 5:175, and Ibn Abu Hatim at 393/2/2. He has nothing in the Six Books except this hadith, found in Abu Dawud, as will be mentioned, Allah willing. He was governor of Egypt from the year 60 until his death there in the year 86.The hadith will come at 8246 from Abu Abdul-Rahman Muqri, from Musa bin Ali, with the same wording. It is also in Jami al-Masanid at 27, from this location and from the coming narration. Ibn Kathir mentioned it in his tafsir, 8:482, citing the coming narration. Hafiz Mizzi related it in Tahzib Kamal [p. 845, photographed manuscript], with a chain through the path of the Musnad, from the coming narration. Abu Dawud related it at 2511 through the path of Abu Abdul-Rahman Muqri, from Musa bin Ali.Shuhh means the most intense stinginess. Al-halia comes from halaa, which is the utmost distress and restlessness. "A cowardice that strips bare" means an intense cowardice, as though it strips the heart out from the severity of fear. This is a figurative use of the word "strip," referring to the surging thoughts and weakness of heart that occur at the moment of fear. So said Ibn Athir.
